Beyond the clash of human versus AI, the 2nd Annual Sparknify Film Festival explores a deeper question: who controls emotional influence in the modern age, and what does it mean for the future of cinema?
September 2, 2026 SAN FRANCISCO, CA — The 2nd annual Sparknify Human vs. AI Film Festival will host its live premiere at San Francisco’s historic Delancey Street Screening Room on September 26, 2026. As Silicon Valley tech pioneers and traditional film veterans collide, the groundbreaking showcase serves as a real-world "Turing Test" for cinematic storytelling.
Selected from over 3,000 global submissions, the premiere highlights 14 finalist short films and other notable and special selections. The festival eliminates traditional genre categories, structuring its entire lineup across core human emotions. Paired side-by-side in public screening sessions, human-directed films face off against generative AI entries, challenging audiences to evaluate stories purely on visual craft and emotional impact without knowing who—or what—created each piece until the final reveal.
"The central question of cinema is shifting," said John Huang, executive festival director and partner of Sparknify. "As generative tools evolve, 'How was this made?' matters far less than 'Did it move you?' This festival places human artistic expression and machine intelligence side-by-side to examine if generative algorithms can evoke human empathy as deeply as traditional directors.”
To establish an impartial standard of critique, the competitive entries are judged by a Grand Jury of Academia comprising over 200 global film school professors. Operating through a completely blind evaluation, the academic jury will decide which finalist receives the festival's highest honor, The Sparknify Humanity Award.
The event takes place at the landmark Embarcadero complex built by Delancey Street Foundation residents, bringing a powerful backdrop of human transformation to the intersection of tech innovation and cinema.
