Down The Hatch wins the 2026 Sparknify Humanity Award, The Way You Sea Me receives the Best Cinema Award, and BENCH is named Best AI-Generated Film.
SAN FRANCISCO, September 27, 2026 — Sparknify today announced the winners of the 2026 Human vs. AI Film Festival. Down The Hatch, directed by Alexandra Lukina of the United States, received the festival’s highest honor, the Sparknify Humanity Award; The Way You Sea Me, directed by Gabriel Mellin of Brazil, received the Best Cinema Award; and BENCH, directed by Mooshin Rhee of South Korea, was named Best AI-Generated Film.
The awards were presented following the September 26 Human vs. AI Film Premiere at the Delancey Street Screening Room in San Francisco. The festival brought traditional filmmakers and generative-AI creators onto the same screen to explore a defining question for contemporary cinema: Can artificial intelligence move audiences as deeply as human filmmakers?
More than 3,000 films were submitted from around the world. Thirty-two short films, 16 human-produced and 16 AI-generated, were selected for the official competition across eight emotion categories: Joy, Sorrow, Intensity, Serenity, Love, Hate, Desire, and Disgust. The program also featured Sweet Fruit, directed by Jhih Siang Yeh of Taiwan, as a Special Selection.

Selected by the Grand Jury of Academia, a global panel of more than 200 film-school professors, scholars, and educators, Down The Hatch received the festival’s $3,000 grand prize for the film judged to most powerfully capture the essence of humanity.
The animated short follows a young daughter who ventures inside a wine bottle after her troubled mother disappears into it. Too young to fully understand her mother’s struggle but determined not to abandon her, the child confronts a painful question: How do you rescue someone who does not want to be saved?
At the center of Down The Hatch is the expressive power of simple lines drawn by human hands. The drawings function as messages transmitted from one human being to another, carrying meaning far beyond the limited visual information they contain. Viewers complete that meaning through lived experience, memory, and empathy. In this sense, the film suggests that certain emotional signals can be fully encoded and decoded only through a shared understanding of what it means to be human.
The film advanced to the final stage of judging after being selected as the human-produced winner of the Love category. Its portrayal of dependency, vulnerability, and a child’s unwavering devotion ultimately earned it the festival’s highest distinction.

The Grand Jury of Cinema presented the Best Cinema Award to The Way You Sea Me, recognizing it as the highest-rated human-produced film in the 2026 competition.
Set beside the sea, the film follows a brief encounter between two children with very different ways of experiencing the world. Through curiosity, imagination, and their growing connection, they learn to confront fear and rediscover the world through their senses.
The Way You Sea Me is also a story about stepping away from smartphones and technological mediation to become fully present in the physical world. The feeling of the sea, the texture of the natural environment, and the direct connection between two children become reminders that human life is experienced through the body as well as the mind. The film celebrates the distinctly human capacity to touch, feel, imagine, and appreciate the natural world without a screen standing between the individual and the experience.
The award recognizes the film’s emotional resonance, technical execution, cinematic quality, and achievement in traditional filmmaking.

The Grand Jury of AI Innovation named BENCH the Best AI-Generated Film of 2026.
The film tells the story of Henry, an elderly man who forms an unexpected friendship with a young boy named Leo. After promising to run with Leo during a school sports day, Henry secretly trains for the race. Their eventual finish, last in place but first in compassion, turns a simple competition into a moving reflection on friendship, dignity, perseverance, and intergenerational connection.
BENCH is a remarkable achievement in generative-AI filmmaking. Through a relationship resembling adopted paternal love, the film affirms the worth and dignity of an individual while reaching the audience with genuine emotional force. Its ability to use emerging technology to create a story that touches the human heart demonstrates the growing potential of AI-assisted cinema. The film also represents a notable achievement for South Korea, reflecting the country’s sustained investment in and cultivation of future-facing entertainment and creative industries.
The award recognizes outstanding achievement in emotional authenticity, narrative complexity, visual realism, and the creative application of generative-AI filmmaking.
A Festival Centered on Emotion
The 2026 competition evaluated human-produced and AI-generated films through separate specialist juries before advancing 16 emotion-category winners to the Grand Jury of Academia.
The final results reflect the festival’s central purpose: not simply to compare filmmaking technologies, but to examine how stories—whether created through traditional cinema or generative AI, shape human emotion and deepen our understanding of humanity.
