There will be 16 short films to review, with most running approximately 6 to 10 minutes each. In total, you should expect to spend around 2 hours watching the films. The entire review process should be completed within one week, but you may review the films at your own pace during that period and do not need to watch them all in one sitting.

How is judging these films different from judging at a conventional film festival?

The judging process is fundamentally the same as at a conventional film festival. Jurors evaluate the strength of the filmmaking, storytelling, direction, originality, and overall execution. The key difference is our emphasis on emotional impact. We ask judges to pay particular attention to how effectively each film expresses its assigned emotion and, most importantly, how strongly it touches and moves the audience.

How should I judge the films, and what criteria should I use to select a winner?

The central premise of the Human vs. AI Film Festival is simple: Which film touches you more? The primary purpose of judging is to evaluate which film most effectively creates the intended response in its audience across three key criteria, with a maximum total score of 40 points.1. Emotional Authenticity (Weighted Double: Rated 1–10, Scored up to 20 Points)At its most fundamental level, your own emotional response is the measurement. Because evocative power is central to our mission, Emotional Authenticity is weighted double (a rating of 1 to 10 multiplied by two, contributing up to 20 points toward the film's total score). Ask yourself which of the two films more successfully made you feel what it set out to make you feel across core emotional categories:Joy: Which film made you feel happier, more uplifted, amused, or delighted?Sorrow: Which film moved you more deeply toward sadness, empathy, loss, or melancholy?Intensity: Which film made you feel more stimulated, tense, excited, fearful, anxious, or emotionally aroused during or after viewing?Serenity: Which film created a stronger sense of calm, peace, reflection, comfort, or emotional stillness?Love: Which film made you feel romance, affection, intimacy, tenderness, or emotional connection more strongly?Hate: Which film more effectively evoked anger, resentment, hostility, revulsion, or another powerful negative emotional reaction?Desire: Which film created a stronger feeling of wanting, longing, attraction, ambition, yearning, or anticipation?Disgust: Which film produced a stronger sense of aversion, discomfort, repulsion, or rejection?2. Yes. As a member of The Grand Jury of AI Innovation, you should consider both the creative and technical use of artificial intelligence as part of your evaluation. Your experience as an AI professional, technologist, creator, or industry leader allows you to assess not only the film’s emotional impact, but also the innovation and sophistication behind how AI was used to achieve it.Consider the originality of the AI-driven concept, creative use of AI tools, technical ambition, visual and narrative coherence, consistency, experimentation, and the extent to which AI enables something distinctive or previously difficult to accomplish. Storytelling, direction, editing, sound, pacing, visual language, symbolism, and overall cinematic execution may also factor into your judgment.The strongest film should demonstrate AI innovation, cinematic excellence, and emotional effectiveness. In other words, consider not only whether the film moved you, but also how inventively and successfully its use of AI helped create that emotional response.

What should I do if I have a conflict of interest with a film?

Accepted Answer

All films provided to the jury will be presented anonymously, without identifying the filmmaker or creator. However, if you recognize a film and personally know its creator, or otherwise believe you have a relationship that could affect or appear to affect—your impartiality, you must recuse yourself from judging that film.This policy is designed to protect the integrity and fairness of the jury process and to safeguard the professional reputation of every judge participating in the festival. Even the appearance of a potential conflict should be taken seriously so that all films are evaluated as independently and objectively as possible.

Question 6

Is there an honorarium for serving as a judge?

Accepted Answer

All judges participate in the Human vs. AI Film Festival on a pro bono basis, so we do not offer an honorarium for the judging work.However, every judge will be formally recognized and honored for their contribution on the festival website and during the film premiere. You will also receive a Certificate of Film Adjudication for this unique film festival. We deeply value the time, expertise, and professional judgment that each jury member brings to the festival.
