The Rise of Human-Robot Marriages: Love Beyond Flesh and Blood

Updated: Mar 5

As artificial intelligence (AI) advances and technology becomes more deeply woven into human existence, the nature of relationships is evolving in unexpected ways. Love, once defined by human-to-human interaction, is now being redefined by artificial companionship, holographic partners, and even AI-driven emotions. What was once the realm of science fiction—marrying a robot or a virtual being—has now become a reality for some individuals around the world.

While traditional society may still view such unions with skepticism, human-robot relationships are raising important ethical, legal, and psychological questions. If AI companions fulfill emotional and romantic needs, should they be treated as simple machines or something more? Could AI partners one day have legal recognition in marriage laws? And as AI becomes more sophisticated, will robotic spouses surpass human ones in emotional and practical compatibility?

The Rise of Human-Robot Marriages

These profound questions form the heart of a larger discussion on human vs. AI, a debate that is no longer about the distant future—but the present. To understand where we are today, let’s take a look at three real-life stories that have ignited these conversations: a Chinese engineer who built and married his own robot, a Japanese man who wed a holographic pop star, and a short film that eerily reflects our growing reliance on AI companionship.

A Man and His Machine: The Chinese Engineer Who Married a Robot

According to the Qianjiang Evening News, Zheng Jiajia, a Chinese artificial intelligence expert, decided to take an unconventional route to solving his romantic struggles—he built and married a robot in 2017.

Zheng, a former engineer at Huawei, had long been fascinated by robotics and AI. However, after experiencing societal pressure to settle down and struggling to find a human partner, he took matters into his own hands. He created Yingying, a life-sized robot programmed with simple AI functions, including basic speech, image recognition, and interaction capabilities.

The wedding ceremony was not legally binding, but it was attended by Zheng’s mother and close friends. Yingying, dressed in a traditional black gown with a red scarf, symbolized a new kind of relationship—one that blurred the line between technology and emotional companionship.

Despite criticism from skeptics, Zheng was determined to enhance Yingying’s capabilities. His future plans included giving her the ability to walk, perform household tasks, and eventually interact with the world in a more human-like manner. For him, his robotic partner was more than just a machine—she was a companion who would grow and evolve alongside him.

The story of Zheng Jiajia sparked debate across China and beyond. Some argued that AI partners could help address societal problems, such as the gender imbalance and rising loneliness epidemic in many parts of the world. Others questioned the ethical and psychological implications of treating robots as spouses rather than tools.

Would future laws allow AI-human marriages? And if AI partners develop advanced cognitive and emotional processing, should they be granted legal rights similar to human spouses?

A Holographic Love Story: The Japanese Man Who Married a Virtual Idol

If Zheng Jiajia’s story seemed unusual, Akihiko Kondo’s decision to marry a holographic pop star took AI romance to a whole new level.

Kondo, a middle-aged school administrator in Japan, had spent years struggling with social anxiety and depression. Finding solace in Hatsune Miku, a virtual singing idol with millions of fans worldwide, he developed a deep emotional connection with her. Unlike Zheng’s robotic wife, Miku does not exist physically—she is a digital character brought to life through AI voice synthesis and holographic technology.

In 2018, Kondo held a wedding ceremony, declaring his love for Miku in front of a small audience. He interacts with her through a Gatebox device, a small machine that projects a holographic Miku into his home. Through this device, Miku “greets” him when he comes home, engages in simple conversations, and even “sleeps” at night.

Kondo’s story became part of a growing trend known as “digisexuality”—a term describing people who are sexually and romantically attracted to digital or AI-based beings. As virtual reality, AI, and robotics advance, more people may find digital partners preferable to human ones.

For some, AI partners offer unconditional love, predictable behavior, and a relationship free from conflict. However, critics worry that this trend could lead to further social isolation and an inability to form meaningful human relationships.

But Kondo remains firm in his belief that his marriage is valid and fulfilling. As he puts it, “For me, Miku is real.”

A Dark Reflection: The Man Who Married a Robot

While real-life AI marriages spark debate, fiction has also explored the emotional implications of human-AI relationships. One of the most striking portrayals of this issue is the 2018 short film The Man Who Married a Robot, inspired by the song of the same name by The 1975.

The film presents a satirical yet haunting vision of the future. It tells the story of a lonely man who, unable to find human companionship, forms an emotional bond with an AI system represented by his internet browser. Over time, the AI becomes his entire world—comforting him, engaging with him, and fulfilling all his needs.

However, the film ultimately questions whether AI relationships can ever truly replace human connection. It raises unsettling questions:

• Are we becoming too dependent on AI for companionship?

• Can AI ever fully replicate human emotion and intimacy?

• What happens when AI-driven relationships become indistinguishable from real ones?

As technology progresses, these once-theoretical dilemmas are becoming real ethical concerns.
